What is modacrylic fiber?
Modacrylic fibers are widely used in high performance protective clothing. It is an important component that protects firefighters from severe burns. Modacrylic in its simplest form is a modified acrylic fiber made from 85% synthetic polymer and 35% acrylonitrile. Combined, modacrylics are inherently flame-retardant synthetic copolymers. It will burn when exposed to direct flame, but will self-extinguish without melting or dripping when the flame is removed. Modacrylics also have excellent resistance to chemicals and solvents, are not attacked by moths and molds, and are non-allergenic.
What is modacrylic fiber used for?
Modacrylics are used by most technical fabric manufacturers to obtain comfortable and protective blends and to produce PPE. Modacrylics are primarily used in applications where environmental or flame retardancy is required or required. This fiber is able to combine flame retardancy with a relatively low density, so the protective gear is not uncomfortably heavy.
