Protect your eyes from workplace hazards
357,000 Australians are unable to enjoy what most people take for granted: the gift of sight. Blindness occurs when the cornea (the clear layer that protects the eye), the retina (the light-sensitive tissue at the back of the eye), or nerve endings are damaged. Eye injuries and trauma accounted for 4% of his blindness, and it’s fair to say that the majority of these 14,280 accidents were work-related.
Common workplace eye hazards
The workplace can pose many risks that need to be managed, so there are many ways your eyes can be damaged, from foreign objects to hard chemicals.
welding
Welding is one of the most common injuries that cause eye injuries. Most types of welding produce potentially harmful UV, infrared, and visible spectrum radiation, so helmets alone do not provide adequate protection. Welders must wear AS/ANS 1337 certified goggles or safety glasses with side shields. Remember that goggles offer better protection from impact, dust, and radiation than safety glasses.
Elliot’s offer special protective glasses and goggles Made from Pyramex that offers 99% protection from UV (A & B rays) and also includes Shade 3 and 5 lenses.
chemicals
Chemicals pose serious eye risks and should be handled with care. For employees working in industrial environments, handling chemicals under high pressure adds to the risks already present. A good way to control eye damage from chemicals is to read the Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) provided by the manufacturer with the hazardous material and follow all instructions. I use Elliotts when working with chemicals. pyramex chemical google.
Construction site
Construction sites often have an endless list of potential eye injuries. Foreign objects and dust are the main causes of construction-related injuries. Debris such as nails, small metal pieces, splinters, and wire ends that can fly through the air, as well as cement mixing, sawing, grinding, and chipping create dust and sand. When choosing glasses, remember that they should be AS/NZS 1337 certified for moderate impact protection.
