WorkSafe QLD Film Promotes Arc Safety Awareness
WorkSafe QLD’s latest arc flash safety film highlights the dangers of arc flash. An arc flash is instantaneous and can set clothing on fire, severely burn human skin, or cause death.
An arc flash is a current that flows through air when the insulation or insulation between charged conductors is no longer sufficient to withstand the applied voltage. The very high temperatures of these arcs are about four times the temperature of the surface of the Sun (about 20,000ยฐC).
Queensland now holds the title of most arc flash incidents in Australia with 47 serious accidents and one fatality in the last 11 years. As the video shows, WorkSafe QLD emphasizes that the best way to eliminate the risk of arc flash is to choose not to work live. If this is not possible, the electrician should manage the risk and apply his PPE (e.g. Various Elliotts ArcFlash PPEs) and follow safe work practices.
